    Varley's plastic people

    The Golden Globe
    Written by John Varley

John Varley seems fascinated by several topics that recur constantly in his books. The Golden Globe is no magnum opus, but it is perhaps the freshest work he's put out since the "Gaea" trilogy (1979--1984).

The Golden Globe is the story of a stage actor, Sparky Valentine, who is on the run from the law throughout the book for one reason or another. The book is part of his "Eight Worlds" universe, in particular the version of it that he created in Steel Beach (1992), and in fact the protagonist of that novel, Hildy Johnson, makes a not insignificant appearance.

Speaking of which, if you liked that book, you'll like this one. The the technology, the social orders hinted at are all in this book. Varley's obsession with the human body as silly putty is here.

Note: This review was written in 1999, but I left it incomplete. When I finished it it in 2003, I fleshed out some sections I had left unwritten. This note included to maintain the integrity of the blogging experience, blah blah blah. --Neil
